Stars in the Capital: 10 Things to Do in D.C. When You’re Not Competing

Without a doubt, taking a trip to Washington, D.C. is an exciting adventure. Especially if you’re heading there as a student competing in a national event. Across the country, K12-powered students have been cooking up creativity and coding their way to victory. Now it’s time to celebrate the finalists of the K12 National Cook-Off and the K12 Robotics League!

After months of hard work, innovative thinking, and fierce competition, these standout students are packing their bags. They are headed to Washington, D.C. for an unforgettable in-person finals experience. The K12 Robotics League finalists will compete at the K12 Headquarters June 3, 2025. While student chefs will whip their way to victory at the Kitchen of Purpose, in Arlington, VA, June 6, 2025.

These finalists wowed the judges with a creative dish in the kitchen and scored big with their robotics skills and teamwork! They’ve proven that passion and perseverance go a long way. We can’t wait to welcome them to the K12 HQ for finals week.

Tour the National Mall: Be one of the 24 million visitors this landscaped park gets each year. Take a stroll past iconic landmarks like the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument. It’s literally a walk-through history!

Snap a Selfie at the White House: You can’t go to D.C. without a glimpse of the White House. However, keep in mind that White House tours require advance notice, but the view from outside it still unforgettable.

Cruise the Potomac River: Hop on a boat tour for a relaxing ride with scenic views of the city. It’s a different way to see the capital, and a fun break from screen time.

Discover the Spy Museum: Decode messages, test your spy skills, and learn about real-world espionage. The Spy Museum Is interactive, immersive, and incredibly cool!

Wander Through the United States Botanic Garden: Take a fresh breather in this lush green space near the capitol. Great for plant lovers, or anyone who just wants a peaceful stroll.

Chek out the National Zoo: Pandas, tigers, elephants – oh my! Part of the Smithsonian Institution, the Smithsonian’s National Zoo, is home to over 2,200 different animals and 13 different exhibits. Also, admission is free, but you will need to reserve your visit with a free entry pass.

Take a Campus Tour: D.C. is home to some amazing universities like Georgetown, George Washington University, and American University. In any case, even if college feels far off, it’s never too early to explore!

Ride the Metro (Like a Local): It’s easy, fast, and let’s your explore neighborhoods like DuPont Circle, Capitol Hill, and Chinatown. Plus, it’s a little adventure in itself!

Try a New Cuisine: From food trucks to international flavors, the D.C. area is a melting pot of delicious eats. So,if you are looking for a meal to remember, check out Chef Isabel Coss’s Pascual, a Michelin recognized restaurant celebrating Mexican cuisine. Or head Arlington to Pirouette for a tasty meal led by executive chef, Chef Adam Hoffa.
