Paws & Possibilities: Inside A K12 Virtual Field Trip with Summit Assistance Dogs

The saying that dogs are man’s best friend takes on new meaning when you see the incredible ways dogs can help people with disabilities, and there is no better place to see it than at Summit Assistance Dogs.

What is Summit Assistance Dogs?

Based in Oak Harbor, Washington, Summit Assistance Dogs is a nonprofit organization provides highly skilled mobility service dogs at no cost to people living with disabilities. Since 2000, they have been on a mission to help individuals regain their independence, increase their confidence, and find a renewed sense of hope through the partnership of a four-legged friend.

Summit describes its mission as “creating life-changing partnerships by providing highly skilled mobility-assistance dogs for people living with disabilities, giving them increased independence and renewed confidence.”

Puppies to Professional: The Education of a Summit Dog

While most dogs spend their days napping, Summit dogs are essentially “full-time students.” Their journey from a clumsy eight-week-old puppy to a focused professional is a rigorous, two-year degree program. Not every dog has the temperament to graduate, making those who do the true valedictorians of the canine world.

The Puppy Elementary Phase It all starts with Puppy Raisers. These volunteers take puppies into their homes to teach the basics. These pups visit grocery stores, malls, and busy streets to ensure they stay calm and confident in any environment. Think of it as social studies for dogs!

Career & College Prep Once they master the basics, dogs move to specialized training to develop their “superpowers” based on their future partner’s needs. Some of these advanced skills include:

  • The Nudge: Using their noses to push automatic door buttons or flip light switches.
  • Expert Retrieval: Picking up items like credit cards or phones without leaving a tooth mark.
  • The Tug: Helping partners open heavy doors or pull off a coat.

Graduation: The Perfect Match

Graduation is the most emotional part of the journey. Each dog is matched with a human partner for an intensive two-week “Team Training” period. This is like a high-stakes orientation where both partners learn to work as one team. It is a beautiful reminder that with the right education and a lot of heart, anything is possible.
